SURELY RYAN WOULD BE back soon. Ruth sat straighter on the sofa, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. She’d been rehearsing what she would say to him ever since she and Michael had arrived at the cottage an hour ago, finding it unlocked and empty. Her temples were throbbing. She didn’t know what Ryan’s reaction to their unexpected arrival would be.

She looked around the rustic living room once more. There was a comfortable sofa, where she was sitting, two big armchairs, a huge welcoming fireplace and Ryan’s drafting table in front of the window. Thank goodness there was also a TV and a VCR, for watching wildlife documentaries was one of Michael’s favorite pastimes. Her grandson had deposited his duffel bag of video cassettes beside the TV, checked out the ocean, which he declared he didn’t like, and headed off to examine the bedrooms. Ruth had merely peeked through the open doorway of the larger room, the one Michael pronounced his father’s. In the second smaller bedroom most of the space was taken up by a scale model of the DrachenSteel. She wondered if she and Michael would end up sleeping on the floor.

She’d been prepared for the fact that there might not be room for them to stay with Ryan. She hadn’t been prepared to find that there were no vacancies at the two inns and one motel she’d inquired at earlier that evening. It was the weddings, the night clerk at the motel had explained. There were never any vacancies around Eternity on weekends because of the weddings. Ruth had no idea what he was talking about.

Now she gazed apprehensively at her grandson, dozing in the big overstuffed chair near the fireplace. It had been a long and tiring day. She hadn’t counted on flight delays in both Indianapolis and Newark when they’d started out that morning. She hadn’t anticipated how unsettling it would be for both of them to drive an unfamiliar rental car at night, or the amount of construction and traffic congestion they encountered on the freeways in and around Boston, or the difficulties in finding Ryan’s remote cottage once they’d finally gotten to Eternity.

She wasn’t altogether certain what she was doing here. She only knew that something had changed in their lives over the past few months, a subtle alteration in Ryan’s attitude toward his son that left her with an icy clutch of fear around her heart. It had begun after he returned from his vacation on St. Gregory and escalated with his decision to come to this place.

Ryan was withdrawing from his son, relegating Michael to the farthest corner of his life, and she could not stand by and see that happen. She had vowed to herself weeks ago that she would follow him to this place, if need be, to ensure Michael’s future happiness. Now she had done just that.

She only hoped it was not too late.
